Acne Medication

Various types of treatment for acne are used, out of which most are medicine based. Acne medication is a very wide term, and may include a great variety of medications. The more effective medications usually start showing results in about three months, while the comparatively less effective medications may take a longer period to produce results.

Some of the acne medications of which mention may be made are briefly given below:

Topical Bactericidals contain benzoyl peroxide, and can be used to treat mild to moderate acne. The gel/cream that contains benzoyl peroxide is applied, two times daily, in the skin pores, on the affected area. It may also come in the form of bar soaps/washes. Besides its therapeutic effect, benzoyl peroxide also stops the formation of new lesions.

Benzoyl peroxide usually gives a 60-70% clearance rate after six weeks. Continued use gives better results. Benzoyl peroxide, unlike antibiotics, is a very strong oxidizer and bacteria do not resist it. But, it causes dryness, redness, and local irritation. The use of a prescribed moisturizer is recommended along with it. Sometimes, chlorhexidine gluconate or triclosan are included in topical bactericidals.

Topical antibiotics are externally applied. Some of them are clindamycin, erythromycin, Stiemycin or tetracycline. They kill bacteria harbored inside the blocked follicles. Topical antibiotics prevent most side effects, like drug interaction or stomach upset. But, they may be awkward to apply in public places.

Oral antibiotics used for treating acne are either erythromycin or tetracycline antibiotics, like tetracycline, oxytetracycline, minocycline, doxycycline or lymecycline. Trimethoprim is, sometimes, used. Yet, decreasing P. acnes bacteria do not reduce the secretion of oil or abnormal cell behavior. This abnormal cell behavior is the starting cause for blocked follicles.

Hormonal treatments are also available. This is more effective in females. A combination of oestrogen and progesterone, drospirenone, or an injection of cortisone are the common ones.

Topical Retinoids attempt to normalize the life cycle of the follicles. Some examples of this kind are tretinoin, adapelin, and tazarotin. They are applied topically, and normally have mild side effects. But, they can cause skin irritation. Oral retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A, and they are usually isotretinoin. A long-term use of it can be significantly effective in controlling acne.

These acne treatment medicines are marketed under various names by various companies. Natural Acne Skin Care, and Acne Net are two leading suppliers of acne medication.

Acne medication is, thus, available in abundance. And, there are many hospitals, healthcare centers, and clinics that specialize in treating acne using such medication. So, if you are too worried because of acne problem, take heart!
